Program Add, Change & Withdrawal Process

Gateway Technical College cares about the success of our students. In an effort to support students’ success and clarify the path towards graduation, Gateway allows students to enroll in one technical diploma or associate degree at a time. The one program limit does not include certificates, related programs within a student’s career pathway, Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

Changing Your Academic Program

To switch academic programs the student must fill out the Program Change Form. This will withdraw the student from the current academic program and activate the student in the new requested program.  There may be additional supplemental admissions items needed to complete the change. Please refer to our Programs of Study page to view the list of academic programs and corresponding admission requirements, locations and curriculum. Students will not be withdrawn from the original program until all supplemental items for the new program are submitted and processed. Students will be added to the current academic term and corresponding curriculum year for the requested program. If this term is no longer open, students will be added to the next academic term and corresponding curriculum year.

Adding a Certificate

Gateway does not limit the number of certificates to which a student can be accepted. To add a certificate, current students must fill out the Certificate Add Form. There may be additional supplemental admissions items needed to add the certificate. Please refer to the certificate program page to view the list of academic certificates and corresponding admission requirements, locations and curriculum. Certificates will not be added to the student record until all supplemental items are submitted and processed. Students will be added to the current academic term and corresponding curriculum year for the requested program. If this is no longer open, students will be added to the next academic term and corresponding curriculum year. Additionally, current students can use the Certificate Add Form to add short term programs including Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician and Advanced Emergency Medical Technician.

Adding a Second Program

Gateway recognizes that students may wish to add an unrelated program in pursuit of their academic and career goals. Students must request approval to add another program.

  • Students requesting to add a related pathway program are exempt from the GPA and credit requirements. View all of Gateway's Career Pathway Maps.
  • Apprenticeship students can be active in both an apprenticeship and a post-secondary academic program. Apprenticeship students looking to apply for an academic program should visit gtc.edu/apply.

Eligibility:

  • Completed at least 12 post-secondary credits at Gateway
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above
  • Only one submission per academic term is allowed

  2. Request forms will be reviewed for eligibility. Students will receive an email of approval or denial to continue in this process.
  3. If eligible, use the link in the confirmation email to schedule a meeting with the academic advisor of the requested program within two weeks.  At this meeting you will discuss your plans for your future academic and career goals. Upon final approval of your request to add a program:

    2. If supplemental items are required, students will be notified by email. Program admission requirements can be seen on the program page.
    3. Once the student has submitted all supplemental items, they will be added to the current academic term and corresponding curriculum year for the requested program. If not submitted within 90 days students will need to complete the process again.
