Gateway’s ELL program offers instruction in reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and speaking. Classes meet two days a week for six hours per week. Fall semester is September to December; spring semester is January to May; and summer term is May to July. Please note, students are required to purchase a set of books which are used the entire academic year.
ELL faculty are certified in teaching English to speakers of other languages and use technology to enhance the student’s learning. Students can then transition into any of Gateway’s 70+ diploma and degree programs.
This program is free to Wisconsin residents ages 18 and older. Students must first complete a two-day, six-hour orientation before participating in the program.
ELL Program Orientation
You can register for the orientation class at Student Services on the campus of your choice. Orientations are held during the first six weeks of each semester. The orientation includes identifying educational goals, taking a written exam to determine the level of their reading and writing abilities, taking an exam to determine speaking and listening levels, receiving class assignment, scheduling classes and buying textbooks. Students must bring a photo ID with a Wisconsin address, current telephone number and money to purchase a textbook and workbook.
