Student Emergency Funding - Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund

Our top priority at Gateway is the health and well-being of our students, faculty, staff and community. Gateway recognizes the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our communities. Funds from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund, or HEERF, are designated to provide direct support to our students for course materials, housing, childcare, food or other COVID-19 related needs due to the disruption of campus operations.

ARP Act: Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund III

The college received $7,135,313 from the U.S. Department of Education through the ARP: American Rescue Plan (HEERF III).

Application for Summer 2021 will open up the week of June 14. Application deadline is June 25. The college intends to support additional students that meet eligibility requirements with ARPA for the Fall 2021 Semester.

CRRSAA Act: Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II

The college received $1,307,278 from the U.S. Department of Education through the CRRSAA: Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (HEERF II)

As of May 24, 2021, 1405 students who were enrolled in the Spring 2021 Semester and met eligibility requirements were supported with emergency grants. 240 additional students were provided immediate emergency funding for Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 to assist with emergencies. The college intends to support additional students that meet eligibility requirements with CRRSAA for the Summer 2021 Semester.

CARES Act: Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund

The college received $2.6 million from the U.S. Department of Education through the CARES Act: Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (HEERF).

As of May 20, 2020, 641 students who were enrolled in the Spring 2020 semester and met eligibility requirements were supported. The college supported additional students that met eligibility requirements for the Summer and Fall 2020 Semesters.

Institutional Portion

Section 18004(a)(1) of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) provides funding to assist institutions with covering costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus. Gateway was awarded a total $14,649,821 in institutional funding under HEERF I (The CARES Act), HEERF II (The Coronavirus Response & Relief Supplementary Appropriations Act), and HEERF III (The American Recovery Act).

  1. Gateway Technical College signed and returned the Certification and Agreement for the Institutional Portion of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Formula Grants authorized by Section 18004(a)(1) of the Cares Act to the U.S. Department of Education on April 21, 2020.
  2. Total expenses incurred as of September 30, 2021 under this section of the act is $6,782,543. Those expenses include such items as instructional resources to transition to online delivery, technology purchases, Wi-Fi hotspots, expansion of Wi-Fi, PPE, cleaning equipment, instructional equipment and software, additional teaching and support staff, and other supplies for campus safety and operations.

Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP)

Section 18004(a)(2) of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) provided additional funds to institutions under the Strengthening Institutions Program to directly address the college’s needs related to the coronavirus. Gateway was awarded a total $1,072,801 in institutional funding under HEERF I (The CARES Act), HEERF II (The Coronavirus Response & Relief Supplementary Appropriations Act), and HEERF III (The American Recovery Act).

  1. Gateway Technical College signed and returned the Certification and Agreement for the Strengthening Institutions Program Portion of the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Grants authorized by Section 18004(a)(2) of the Cares Act to the U.S. Department of Education on April 30, 2020.
  2. Total expenses incurred as of September 30, 2021 is $153,320. Those expenses include recovery of lost revenues, student support and other institutional uses.
