Welding/Maintenance & Fabrication

The Welding/Maintenance & Fabrication 17-credit technical diploma program provides students with the welding fabrication basics. Credits earned in this program can be applied to any of the three other welding programs, as the courses are the basis of the other programs. Graduates of this program may find careers working in auto repair, HVAC and facility maintenance operations.

The Advanced Welding technical diploma program is for those who are looking to improve their basic welding skills. Instructors suggest that a student should take this program before advancing on to Welding – Robotics or Pipe Welding programs. The Welding-Pipe Welding technical diploma program prepares students to become pipe fitters. Courses include Pipe Oxyacetylene Fitting and Pipe Gas Metal Arc Welding. Students can obtain certifications in Pipe Shielded Metal Arc Welding and Pipe Gas Tungsten Arc Welding.

What does a welder do?

Graduates of the welding program can find a career in several fields of their choice. Careers include building trade apprenticeships, repair welding, pipefitter/welder, power house welding, production welding, aircraft welding, pressure vessel construction, structural steel welding, soldering and brazing, automotive welding and fabricator. Basic skills of welding are the same across several industries, so welders can easily shift from one industry to another, depending on where they are needed.

Learning by doing

Gateway’s Welding programs are offered on the Elkhorn and Racine Campuses and are structured to incorporate a large amount of hands-on learning opportunities. Students participate in a variety of lab projects and individual assignments to learn and refine welding skills.

The state-of-the-art facilities consist of eighteen individual booths that are equipped to provide training in the four main welding processes, OFW, SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW. The Welding labs have a comprehensive array of metal working equipment including a CNC break press, a metal sheer, an ironworker, a CNC plasma table, a plate roller, a planishing hammer, an english wheel, an acorn table, and individual fabrication tables.

Job and salary outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is expected to grow 15 percent through 2020, reflecting the need for welders in the manufacturing process. The median annual salary of welders, cutters, solderers and brazers was $37,420 in 2014.
