Gateway Study Abroad

Employers today look for people who can work and communicate effectively in a diverse environment. They want people with initiative and leadership skills. A service project in Belize or global project with a German team would grab a potential employer's attention. 

Built around Gateway’s academic programs, Gateway Study Abroad opportunities are typically two to three weeks in length, planned around breaks to work with student schedules. They typically cost less than $3,500. Gateway also works with students to help cover program costs – funding up to $750 from Gateway, financial aid eligibility and additional fundraising opportunities. Complete and submit your application prior to the deadline.

To be eligible, students must: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a minimum of 2.5 grade point average in declared program
  • Provide two (2) recommendations from Gateway faculty members
  • Interview as part of the application process
  • Comply with department and college policies and remain free of disciplinary action or progressive discipline action
  • Have or obtain a valid U.S. Passport

You can apply for Gateway Study Abroad classes in seven simple steps: 

  1. Find the Study Abroad opportunity you want to pursue below
  2. Complete and submit your application by the deadline 
  3. Prepare for interview and presentation dressed in business casual attire
  4. Pay your $80 enrollment fee, then attend orientation & meet your classmates 
  5. Register for class via My Gateway during registration 
  6. Attend class as scheduled
  7. Travel to your international destination

Germany

On your Hessen Germany Exchange, students will visit Gateway’s sister school, Kaufmännische Schulen-Hanau in Germany. You’ll learn about business and manufacturing in Germany, specifically in the state of Hessen.  Immerse yourself in German culture and spend a portion of the program staying with local host families. Students will also visit historic cultural sites and work on a joint business project before and during travel.

Slovenia and Croatia

Students will travel to Slovenia and Croatia, stopping at both the U.S. Embassy and Ljubljana University’s Smart Factory in Slovenia and then UNESCO sites like Plitvice National Park and Diocletian’s Palace in Croatia. Students will visit several local business organizations, as well as a multinational marketing agency, where they’ll learn about operational management, and engage with industry experts to learn about how global companies advance investment opportunities in the country/region. Students will also participate in a strategy challenge, an interactive meeting that brings together knowledge learned in the classroom and the practical skills necessary to succeed in today’s business world.

Kenya

Students will visit Kenya, working with a local non-profit, Hilltop Global Group, in community building projects to set up mobile clinics, assist in medical treatment facilities and to provide service to communities in need. While providing healthcare services, students will get hands-on training in the field, while learning about the country’s rich traditions and customs. Plus, students will visit animal care facilities.

Costa Rica

Students will improve Spanish-speaking skills in this two-week language immersion program focused on language training, cultural enrichment and community service work. Starting with a week in the coastal city of Tamarindo, students will go through intensive language training and work with local NGOs on English language training for children and reforestation efforts. For the second week, students will spend time in and around the capital city of San Jose, where they’ll stay with local host families, get immersed in the language and culture, and work with local organizations on sustainability projects.
