Architectural – Structural Engineering Technician

Program Requirements: 

Behind every great building there are professionals whose job it is to turn concepts into the  building plans needed to make the building a reality. An Architectural-Structural Engineering Technician degree from Gateway Technical College can help you become a part of a building design team.

Gateway’s program focuses on all aspects of building design from concept through construction. This includes building information modeling (BIM). BIM lets students to create a digital model of a building that allows for decisions and revisions to be made in the early conceptual stages of the building document production.

The goal of the degree program is to produce architectural technicians that have background knowledge of civil engineering design and construction, coupled with advanced education in the specific areas of architectural and structural design. Students will be trained to support and work with a professional architect or project manager. Skills learned in the program include designing architectural plans, researching and identifying mechanical systems for buildings applying building codes, and preparing presentation drawings.

What does an architectural technician do?

Technicians read blueprints to determine structural dimensions, inspect construction sites to ensure design accuracy and prepare reports on statuses of design projects. Entry-level opportunities include civil engineering technician, building inspector, estimator, assistant architect, structural detailer, assistant construction manager and utility/code coordinator. Technicians can work for private firms and local and state government.

Learning by doing

All classes within the program use real world problems and projects for the students to work on instead of just book exercises. This fusion of education and application is the fundamental building block of the program.

Students obtain hands-on understanding of design and inspection skills used in the design and construction processes. Students are trained to use the newest and most relevant software in the industry including Civil 3D, Revit and Google SketchUp.

Students are encouraged to join the Civil Engineering Technician Associate (CETA) student club. This club gives students networking and professional development opportunities. CETA hosts a Professional Night each Fall where local industry professionals network with current students.

Job and salary outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of architectural engineers is expected to grow 5 percent through 2022. The 2014 median pay for an architect was $73,340 in 2014. As infrastructure continues to age, civil engineers will be needed to help rebuild and renovate older buildings and structures. The field of civil engineering is expected to grow 20 percent through 2022. The median annual salary of civil engineering technicians was $79,340 in 2014.
