Gateway follows a priority placement process for students admitted into high-demand programs. The priority placement process provides a clear and consistent path to securing a spot in our high-demand programs. Students admitted into these programs progress through three stages:

Pre-Core: Admitted to the program to complete general education coursework, program pre-requisites and academic preparedness requirements.

Core-Ready: Admitted to the program, completed academic preparedness requirements and ready for placement in core program coursework.

Core-Active: Admitted to the program and placed in core program coursework

The priority placement process is used to place students into core coursework once academic preparedness requirements have been met. Academic preparedness requirements are specified by program of study to be eligible to begin core coursework. Once all academic preparedness requirements are met, students are considered core-ready. Core-active status is awarded based on program application completion date and residency status at the time of placement.

Gateway Technical College follows the residency priority dates outlined in the TCS 10.07 Wisconsin State Statute. Students who live in the Gateway Technical College district (Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties) and complete an application by the dates below get priority over other Wisconsin residents. After these priority dates, students from other parts of Wisconsin have equal priority with district residents. Students from outside Wisconsin will be seated on a space available basis after all Wisconsin residents.

  • For fall programs, complete application by January 1.
  • For spring programs, complete application by May 1.
  • For summer programs, complete application by October 1.

To review your program’s academic preparedness requirements and your progress in meeting these requirements, log in to My Gateway and select the Priority Placement Card. Then select the program of study for which you want to review your academic preparedness requirements, and select the semester you would begin your core program courses.

All priority placement correspondence will be sent to your Gateway student email.

Please note: The college formerly used a petition process for placement into particular programs of study. Petitioning is no longer used at Gateway.
