Tutoring Services, located within Gateway's Learning Success Centers, provides tutoring for any student enrolled in Gateway Technical College courses. Free tutoring is available in many subject areas and in multiple formats. Trained tutors help students learn how to understand course concepts, improve study skills, and develop test-taking strategies. The goal of tutoring at Gateway is to help students learn how to learn best.
What does one-on-one tutoring look like?
During a typical tutoring session, you and the tutor will sit at a table with or without a computer to discuss your course assignments or upcoming quizzes or exams. To quickly identify where in particular you want to focus during the session, bring your assignment, textbook, course notes, and other course materials. As you and the tutor work together, the tutor will help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you to continue to work independently when you are away from the Center.
In tutoring sessions for writing, tutors act as outside readers, asking clarifying questions that will help you to revise your writing to meet your assignment goals. Either you or the tutor will read your work aloud during the session. This technique will help you to “hear” errors that may be missed in silent reading. Finally, it’s important to know that tutors will not proofread or edit your writing. Instead, they will help you to learn how to identify grammar and mechanical errors and how to fix them in current and future assignments.
Live online tutoring is available free of charge to Gateway students and can accessed through the BrainfuseHelpNow button in their Blackboard course pages. Help with math and writing are available 24/7. Help with many other subjects, including accounting, chemistry, and many other subjects is also available. Stop in to any campus Learning Success Center should you need assistance in getting set up online. See the Brainfuse Instruction Sheet and BrainFuse Fall 2016 Schedule.
