Kenosha BPA student group takes home state honors, qualifies for nationals

Three Gateway Technical College students from the Kenosha Campus took home six first-place honors at the Business Professionals of America Spring Leadership Conference at Lakeshore Technical College Feb. 19-Feb. 21.

Benjamin Leon (Kenosha) led the group by capturing first place in three events. He took first in Computer Programming Concepts, Computer Security as well as Java Programming.

Lorissa Cheatham (Pleasant Prairie) took first-place honors in two events, Advanced College Accounting and Federal Income Tax Accounting.

Michelle Sauceda (Kenosha) placed first in Advanced Spreadsheet Applications.

In all, the trio took home 14 top-five honors at the state event in 13 different events. Other strong placements include:

Sauceda also took third in Advanced Interview Skills; and fourth in Financial Math and Analysis, Fundamental Word Processing Skills and Management/Marking/Human Resources Concepts.

Cheatham also took fifth in Fundamental Word Processing Skills.

Leon also took fourth in PC Servicing and Troubleshooting as well as Computer Network Technology, and fifth in Information Technology Concepts.

At the state event, students competed in the areas of information technology, accounting and administrative professional skills. Additionally, students had the opportunity to compete in interview skills and public speaking. Students were judged by industry professionals who are able to also share their expertise with students.

BPA is the national career/technical student organization for students preparing for careers in the business field.
