News Release:

Gateway students and staff volunteered at two local non-profit organizations as part of an effort to observe the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The initial Day of Service event had to be delayed because of a snowstorm and was then set for a date in March. The service efforts provided opportunities for students and employees to honor Dr. King’s vision by engaging in meaningful volunteer activities throughout the week, as well as aligning with his commitment to community, equality and service.

“Celebrating Dr. King’s legacy with a day of service connects our students to his message that we are all responsible for building a beloved community,” said organizer and Impact Program coordinator Sarah Marbes. “These service events are a way for students and staff to learn more about social issues and support solutions that address them.”

Volunteers at the Women’s Resource Center in Racine sorted and organized donations so they are accessible to families in need. At Twin Oaks Shelter for the Homeless, the group went on a tour and learned a lot about homelessness in Walworth County. They also worked on the yard, playground and picnic areas for use in warmer weather.
