Four Gateway Technical College apprentice students were awarded $1,500 Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation Tools of the Trade scholarships to help them cover out-of-pocket expenses such as tuition, tools and clothing so that they are able to complete their training.
The Gateway apprentices are part of a statewide effort by Great Lakes to award a record $300,000 in scholarships to 200 construction and industrial trade apprentices attending Wisconsin Technical College System colleges. Gateway apprentices awarded the scholarships are:
- Heather Faltinson, Lake Geneva, Computer Numerical Control Machinist
- Angel Garcia, Racine, Electrical
- Thomas Karczewski, Trevor, Electrical
- Kyle Sondergaard, Milwaukee, Electrical
“Our scholarships help technical college students overcome financial barriers and complete highly skilled training programs so they can advance to in-demand careers,” said Richard D. George, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Lakes. “We’re proud to help Wisconsin’s hardworking apprentices build brighter futures.”
Since the program was launched, 17 Gateway apprentices have received scholarships from Great Lakes.
Great Lakes has supported Wisconsin apprentices with financial need since 2013. Over the past five years, 94 percent of Tools of the Trade scholarship recipients have either completed or continued their apprenticeships the following semester.
