Gateway Technical College’s Culinary Arts students have begun holding their traditional Fall Semester weekly International Lunch series at the SC Johnson Student Life Center in the Lake Building on the Racine Campus, 1001 S. Main St.

Students provide a five-course meal 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. most Thursdays in the semester, which can be purchased for $8 by staff and the public. Each meal includes a main entree, bread, vegetable, soup, salad and dessert.

Culinary instructor Adam Larkin says the experience of having to focus on planning and preparing food from a different region each week provides students with a broad knowledge base that they will need once they enter their career.

“Students may have never come across some of these food products, ever,” says Larkin. “This helps them to learn different cooking methods and opens their eyes to other types of food.”

One student is responsible for choosing the menu for that day’s theme and determining a budget for it.

Food from the following countries and regions will be featured on the following dates:

  • Sept. 29: Spain and Portugal
  • Oct. 13: Germany, Europe
  • Oct. 20: Asia
  • Oct. 27: France
  • Nov. 3: South America and the Caribbean Islands
  • Nov. 17: Middle East
  • Dec. 1: India
  • Dec. 8: British Isles
  • Dec. 9: Australia and New Zealand
