Phi Theta Kappa

Are you enrolled in an Associate Degree program at Gateway Technical College? Have you completed 12 credits toward your degree? Is your cumulative grade point average 3.5 or above? If you answered “yes” to these three questions, then you qualify for membership in Phi Theta Kappa, the only nationally acclaimed honor society serving two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa was founded in 1918 by a group of Missouri two-year college presidents who wanted to honor the scholastic achievements of their students. Since then, more than 800 active and alumni chapters have spread across the United States. Phi Theta Kappa has been recognized by the American Association of Community and Junior College as the official honor fraternity of two-year colleges since 1929. Phi Theta Kappa strives to provide scholarships for continued education, opportunities for leadership training, an intellectual climate for the interchange of ideas and ideals.

What does Phi Theta Kappa stand for?

Phi Theta Kappa stands for wisdom (Phi), aspiration (Theta), and purity (Kappa). Our members possess stability and strength of character, achievement and success. The society’s colors are blue for scholarship and gold for purity.

What does membership in Phi Theta Kappa provide?

  • Education/cultural programs, scholarships, and service opportunities.
  • A special membership certificate and fraternity jewelry.
  • Access to society publications and Golden Key Magazine (during active membership).
  • A national alumni association for graduates.

At graduation, members have the honor of wearing a special Phi Theta Kappa tassel and, if desired, a graduation stole. These can be purchased from the Phi Theta Kappa online store. Please log in using your PTK credentials. The society seal and stamp are affixed to both diplomas and transcripts.
