Gateway's 4-week, 160-hour, Basic Jail Academy qualifies its graduates to become certified as a Basic Jailer within Wisconsin. Course candidates must be age 18 or older, be a U.S. citizen, complete an oral interview with a panel, and undergo a physical assessment and criminal history records check. Students will learn hands-on in Gateway's Sim City law enforcement facility.
Jailers guard inmates in county jails and detention centers in accordance with established regulations and procedures. Some counties may also guard prisoners in transit between jails, courtroom, prison, or other points (this varies by county).
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean annual wage for correctional officers and jailers was $44,350 in 2014.
