Expanding our reach

Most of us think of school as a Fall event but at Gateway we have extended our reach in many new ways into all seasons. For the 2017-18 Academic Year, Gateway students participated in study abroad programs in France, Southeast Asia, Germany and Spain.

Study abroad is only one way in which we are extending our reach. In partnership with Snap-on Incorporated, Gateway has provided training in Morocco, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This summer, we will host 150 college instructors from 35 states to learn about our Snap-on Certification program. Expanding our reach has provided Gateway students and staff some very important and engaging experiences.

As the needs of our communities’ workforce changes and skill requirements increase, our community can be confident that Gateway students are leading the way in global skill attainment.

WAT grant training will be provided by Gateway to area businesses.

Gateway to train 393 as part of WAT grant

Gateway will train 393 workers from 10 area companies as part of Workforce Advancement Training Grant initiatives totaling $322,383.

The grants will support a company’s efforts for continuous improvement, increasing efficiency and productivity. They will help a company to retain the workers they currently have and to increase its competitive productivity. Some of the training Gateway will provide through the grant includes computer numeric control training, pneumatic, robotics, telecommunications, leadership and maintenance.

Gateway’s apprenticeship numbers remain strong.

Apprenticeship event held for 36 completers

Gateway Technical College honored 36 apprentice completers at the 2017-18 apprenticeship class commemoration June 7 at the SC Johnson integrated Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Center.

Apprenticeships were completed in the areas of barbering, cosmetology, construction electrical, tool and die, wastewater treatment operator, plumbing, press set-up operator and heating, ventilation and cooling.

Middle-schooler Eugene Faust won the President’s Award at Gateway’s hands-on Nitro X camp.

Build the car – then race it offered at summer camp

Several students walked away winners from Gateway Technical College's Nitro X summer camp held at the college's Horizon Center for Transportation Technology. Eugene Faust won the President’s Award, Patrick Sarauer won the drag race and Sturgis Fullington won the road course race.

The Nitro X camp was held weeklong at Gateway, providing middle school students a fun way to learn about cars and the automotive industry. Campers were able to build their own fuel-powered, remote-control truck – and then race it at the end of the week.

They also learned about the industry through hands-on activities at the Horizon Center, the epicenter of Gateway’s auto and diesel technology programs. Students also took trips to area dealerships and transportation leaders of Burlington RV, Kriete Group, Palmen and Lynch.

GED programs continue to help residents meet their education and career goals.

Two new Gateway programs will train students for in-demand careers.

Enrollment open for advanced manufacturing programs

Enrollment is open for the college’s two new programs created to address the hiring needs of Foxconn and other advanced manufacturing companies in Southeastern Wisconsin.

The Advanced Manufacturing Technician associate degree combines mechanical, electronic and information technology to streamline the manufacturing process through intelligent automation. The Supply Chain Management associate degree provides training for managers to oversee the process of moving a product from the supplier to customer, including ways to keep costs low and improve service.

Gateway will also hold an open house 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. July 17 at the Student Services Multipurpose Room in the Racine Building on the college’s Racine Campus, 901 Lake St.

Gateway’s financial report is again lauded nationally.

Financial report recognized with national award

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded Gateway Technical College the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its comprehensive annual financial report.

The association indicated in its news release that Gateway’s report “has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and groups to read the CAFR.”
