Gateway Technical College is recognized as a leader in Wisconsin for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) training. EMS professionals respond to emergency calls, care for injured patients in emergency situations and transport patients to medical facilities. Join this respected program and become a community lifesaver. Gateway’s specialized training facility, the Health and Emergency Response Occupations Center (HERO) located in Burlington is home to EMS training. The center provides advanced training facilities and equipment including human-patient simulators, an ambulance and break-out rooms for scenario-based training. The EMS program cluster consists of four programs including EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate Tech, EMT-Paramedic and Paramedic Technician. Each program is a stepping stone for the next starting with the EMT-Basic program. The level of certification needed for employment is dependent on where a graduate is looking to apply and what type of work they will be doing. Each EMS-based facility including firehouses and private ambulatory services require different levels of certification.

30-531-6 Advanced EMT Curriculum Sheet 2013-14.pdfThe Advanced EMT technical diploma program consists of 170 hours of training that builds on the foundational skills learned in the Emergency Medical Technician program. Students develop skills in the areas of intravenous access, fluid administration, clinical decision making, and advanced patient assessment. Satisfactory completion of clinical/field time is performance based so actual number of hours may vary from student to student. Completion of the program will allow the individual the ability to test and credential through the National Registry of EMTs.
30-531-3 Emergency Medical Technician Curriculum Sheet 2013-14.pdfThe Emergency Medical Technician technical diploma program includes 180 hours of entry-level training in emergency medicine. Students develop the skills and knowledge needed to assess and manage all types of injuries and acute illnesses while providing safe and rapid patient transport to a medical facility. Emergency medical technicians can drive an ambulance, open and maintain a patient’s airway, ventilate patients, perform CPR and other basic lifesaving skills. Completion of the program will allow the individual the ability to test and credential through the National Registry of EMTs.
Emergency Medical Technician is the foundational program for Gateway’s EMS cluster. Anyone wishing to pursue other levels of EMS licensure, such as Advanced EMT or Paramedic, must first be licensed as an Emergency Medical Technician before being eligible to register in subsequent EMS licensure programs.
31-531-1 EMT - Paramedic Curriculum Sheet 2013-14.pdfThe EMT – Paramedic technical diploma provides students with 650 hours of classroom lecture and skills lab and up to 500 hours of hospital clinical and field time. Students must first be licensed in Wisconsin at the Emergency Medical Technician, Advanced EMT, or EMT Intermediate level and be current in healthcare provider CPR before enrolling in this program.
EMT-Paramedics can perform more acute care and administer advanced drug therapies. They can also perform surgical procedures to open airways and provide resuscitative drugs. Paramedics have an increased knowledge of lifesaving skills as well as advanced emergency assessment expertise. All courses in the EMT-Paramedic diploma program can be applied to the Paramedic Technician associate degree.
This program is offered on a part-time basis to accommodate shifts worked by many EMS agencies. After successfully completing Gateway’s written and practical exam students will be able to test and credential through the National Registry of EMTs.
10-531-1 Paramedic Technician Curriculum Sheet 2013-14.pdfPotential employers may ask for additional course credits beyond EMT-Paramedic certification and Gateway has developed the Paramedic Technician associate degree program to meet those needs. The associate degree builds on the EMT-Paramedic technical diploma program as the EMT-Paramedic program coursework is the first year of the associate degree. The second year of the program is a combination of core competency classes and other advanced classes that can include advanced anatomy, advanced physiology, microbiology and developmental psychology.
Graduates can expect to find jobs with private ambulance companies, fire departments or hospital emergency rooms. The combination of classwork and training make students eligible to seek membership with area volunteer fire departments as well.
To fully prepare students for a career as an EMT or Paramedic, Gateway Technical College provides training facilities and advanced equipment allowing students to fully immerse in hands-on learning.
The HERO Center gives instructors the ability to stage scenarios in several breakout rooms to simulate real-world emergencies in settings like industrial areas, kitchens, second-floor apartments and medical facilities. The center also has two ambulances used for further training opportunities.
Students learn and practice skills in simulated situations that encompass the entire patient care cycle. Scenarios include treating patients in a living room or kitchen, loading them into an ambulance and then bringing them to the HERO Center and into a simulated emergency room.
Beyond typical classroom presentations and small group work, students receive a large amount of hands-on learning using the human patient simulator. The simulator helps students practice technical skills by simulating real-life emergencies in a controlled lab setting. The simulator acts and looks like an actual real-life patient and also provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, technical ability and critical thinking skills.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of emergency medical technicians and paramedics is expected to grow 33 percent between 2010 and 2020. Growth in this occupation is due to increasing call volumes by the aging population. Pay for EMTs and paramedics depends on the employment setting, geographic location of the jobs as well as training and experience. Annual median hourly salary of EMTs and paramedics was $30,360 in 2010.
Upon successful completion of each diploma or degree program, students will qualify for certification and can take the National Registry Emergency Medical Technician exam. Upon successful completion of the test, graduates will be nationally certified at the corresponding EMT level allowing them to be employed at a number of companies and agencies. These national certifications need to be renewed every two years.
