Gateway Technical College would like to thank the community for its overwhelming interest in the Medical Assistant program. In reviewing the Medical Assistant program’s capacity, the job market, and current field technology, Gateway Technical College is not currently accepting applications. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on the size of the practice. Medical assistants can perform administrative tasks such as receptionist duties, arranging patients for hospital admissions and testing as well as handling bills and recordkeeping. Clinical duties can range from recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to assisting physicians during an exam. Medical assistants may also instruct patients about medications, prepare and administer medications, and draw blood.
Students practice all clinical skills learned in the classroom in the student lab. The lab features the latest medical equipment including EKG machines, exam tables, sphygmomanometer, injection pads, venipuncture arms and a variety of other learning aids.
Once students have a clear understanding of the basic medical skills, they will continue to reinforce them by practicing on other students. Upon completion of the program’s core classes, students must complete a 160 hour practicum at a local clinical site.
Participation is the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) student organization is highly encouraged. AAMA’s mission is to provide medical assistants with further education, certification and networking opportunities. The AAMA also provides the exam for certification leading to the credential of Certified Medical Assistant.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is expected to grow by 31 percent from 2010 to 2020. Demand is rising due to the growth of the aging baby-boomer population, which will continue to increase the demand for preventative medical services. The median annual salary of medical assistants was $28,860 in May 2010. The earnings of medical assistants vary, depending on experience, skill level and location.
The American Association of Medical Assistants certification exam is optional for program graduates but employers may require certification for employment. Upon passing the exam, students are considered Certified Medical Assistants.
