Created by AmeriCorps*VISTA volunteers, the Service Learning Center offers resources, contact information, and toolkits to students, faculty, and community organizations to start, implement, and complete a service learning project. The Service Learning Center acts as a neutral liaison between all parties involved in a service learning project to ensure that student placement, communication, and end product are achieved as expected. We work together with the students, faculty, and community partner to ensure that any challenges or problems are solved effectively and efficiently. We also compile all information on hours, number of students, and projects for the campus and promote success stories on campus and in the community.
We provide a Service Learning Course Design Workshop aimed at instructing faculty how to implement service learning in existing or new courses. This workshop is offered once a semester and is open to all faculty (full-time or adjunct). For more information, please visit the Faculty page.
We provide in-class presentations on service learning, reflection, and the continuum of service. These orientations are meant to instruct a student how to begin a project, compile reflective journaling, and complete a successful service learning project.
We can act as an initial contact person to find placement in the community if placement is not supplied by the instructor. We provide forms and documents to instruct on rules and protocols, the contract a student should sign with the community partner, and reflection log templates.
For Community Partners
While striving to eliminate duplication or confusion as to whom to contact, we act as an initial contact inside the campus to connect to faculty and student groups. We collect an annual needs assessment aimed at providing the information necessary to instructors and students in needed areas. We can mediate any situations that may arise (as needed). We also communicate community events and projects to the campus community and promote ongoing opportunities in our newsletter and website.
