“Reclaiming Our Time” is about inspiring our community to reflect on the ways historic wrongs are being corrected and the spaces the African-American community has created to celebrate culture, history, and community.
Gateway students are encouraged to submit an essay about one of the following subjects: Serena Williams, James Baldwin, Kimberle Crenshaw, 1968 Olympics, The Hate You Give, Ryan Coogler, Maxine Waters, Eunique Jones Gibson, Michelle D. Alexander ,Missy Elliott, LeBron James (I Promise School), Ayanna Pressley, Stacey Abrams or James McCune Smith.
- How has the subject challenged the status quo in our society?
- What have been the most important outcomes of the subject’s impact on our society?
- How has the subject inspired or influenced others?

Entry Submission Deadline: Monday, February 17, 2020 At 5 p.m.

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, cultural knowledge, structure and clarity (spelling/grammar/punctuation). Students are encouraged to stop into a Learning Success Center or campus library for assistance and review of their essay.
Submission winners will be notified via their Gateway email before February 28.
