More than 1,000 prospective students were recognized for graduation at Gateway’s commencement ceremony.

Ceremony honors more than 1,000 grads

Karla Krehbiel offered four pieces of advice for Gateway Technical College graduates at their commencement ceremony: challenge yourself, learn to get back up when you’ve failed, work hard and choose a mentor who can continue to guide and advise you in your career.

“A college diploma is a wonderful tool in this world, one that opens many doors of opportunity,” said Krehbiel, regional president of Johnson Bank for Southeast Wisconsin. Krehbiel took classes at Gateway while still in high school, working three jobs at one point while enrolled at the college.

The ceremony recognized 1,009 prospective candidates for graduation from Summer 2016, Fall 2016, Spring 2017 Summer 2017 semesters. A total of 321 graduates participated in the ceremony.

Gateway named top 20 workplace

Gateway Technical College again has been named one of the top places to work among large employers in southeastern Wisconsin, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel’s Top 100 Workplaces 2017 list.

Gateway ranked in the top tier in the large company category of businesses with 500 employees or more, as it employs 660. The college has also earned the distinction of being named to the Journal Sentinel Top Workplaces Hall of Fame for being named a top workplace seven of the eight years the survey has been conducted.

Partnership helps Gateway grads transfer to Carthage

A new partnership gives graduates of most Gateway Technical College programs the ability to transfer those credits to Carthage College, saving them time and money toward earning a bachelor’s degree.

This agreement offers eligible Gateway Technical College associate degree and diploma graduates guaranteed admission to Carthage to complete their bachelor’s degree. A maximum of 68 credits can be applied toward a Carthage degree, and many graduates can enter the four-year college with junior status.

A total of 17 recruits graduated from the Gateway’s Law Enforcement Academy at a ceremony held on the Kenosha Campus.

Brady Winger was honored with the Highest Academic Average award; Allison George earned the Second Highest Academic Average; and Jamie Keeton received the Top Gun Award.

Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth was the keynote speaker for the graduation ceremony. The recruit speech was given by Nicholas Moro.

Students were able to explore college and career possibilities at Yo Puedo.

Yo Puedo provides career college advice to students

Gateway’s Yo Puedo College Day provided a number of ways for the 115 Latino high school students who attended the event a way to explore career options, interact with current Latino college students and learn more about the college and resources available to them.

The event provides a welcoming environment for the students from Kenosha Unified School District and Racine Unified School District to discover the college. Many of those attending may be first-generation college students seeking an education at Gateway because of its flexible scheduling, convenient locations and affordable tuition.​

Career options are explained to students through hands-on activities and college experts on are hand to show them how to make possible their dream of pursuing and earning a college degree.

Area students brought many engineering and problem-solving skills to compete in the college’s annual SumoBot event.

Students wrestle with big robot, engineering competition

The Blue Shark Robotics team from Fort Atkinson Middle School captured the top position for a second straight year at Gateway Technical College’s annual SumoBot competition, held May 23 at the college’s SC Johnson integrated Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Center in Sturtevant.

Blue Shark Robotics also took first in the Timed Task and Speed and Agility categories on its way to beating out more than 400 other student competitors. The LakeView Technology Academy team from Kenosha Unified School District team Mistakes Were Made took first in the SumoBot wrestling competition.

Students and their robots competed in four events: Presentation and Documentation, Timed Task, Speed and Agility and SumoBot wrestling. An overall winner of the competition was also crowned.

Student Mark Short had great success at national business competition.

Gateway BPA student takes honors nationally

Student Mark Short captured first place in Personal Financial Management Presentation and took honors in five other categories in early May at the Business Professionals of America National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla.

Short took second place in the Financial Management and Analysis Concepts category and third place in the Advanced Spreadsheet Applications category, as well as placing in the top 10 in three other categories: Management, Marketing and Human Resources Concepts; Business Meeting Management Concepts; and Parliamentary Procedures Concepts.

Short captured six first-place honors at the state BPA competition on his way to qualifying for the national event.

Gateway Lean Six effort lauded nationally

Gateway Technical College’s work to streamline its mail system and make it more customer-friendly was recognized recently by the American Society for Quality International Team Excellence Awards.

The mail delivery system was in need of an overhaul, and a four-member team used Lean Six Sigma methods to determine the best way to fix the issue. The team’s work was a resounding success – delivery times have been reduced greatly, and the system now has an 80 percent approval rating.

The model and work was chosen by the ASQ to be presented at the national awards competition.
