President & CEO
Gateway Technical College
Gateway has made a commitment to our students, staff and our community to reduce waste, invest in renewable energy sources and protect our environment. As the days get longer and the sun shines brighter, we are capturing some of that sunlight with solar collectors on each of our campuses. As the spring rain brings spring flowers, we are collecting rain water in our rain gardens, and as the winds blow across the campus, we are turning some of it into energy with our wind turbines. Each year we look for ways to sharpen our focus on sustainability. Please see more information about our commitment in a report at www.gtc.edu/sustainability.
This year I am proud to share with you that Gateway has been selected as one of 30 colleges from across the United States named as a finalist for an award recognizing leadership and innovation in the area of environmentalism and sustainability in higher education. There are two aspects to this award. One is the video contest, with the winner to be chosen by popular vote. (Thanks to all of you who participated in the voting. The winner will be announced this week.) The other aspect involves a group of sustainability experts reviewing the applications of the finalists and determining which college or university best meets their criteria.
The 2014 Climate Leadership Award is issued by Second Nature, a national nonprofit that works to create a healthy, just and sustainable society by transforming higher education. We are proud to be considered one of the best of the colleges most committed to sustainability. Thank you for all you do to support this vision.
