Tasty culinary creations were the order of the day Feb. 28 as the Wings in the Spring culinary contest was held in the SC Johnson Student Life Center of the Racine Campus. Six culinary students prepared six different types of chicken wings. For $5, diners received samples of all six wings and a dessert. Afterward, they were asked to vote for their favorite.

Wing flavors included jerk chicken, honey mustard barbecue Dijon, spicy Asian glazed, teriyaki, buffalo and Cajun smoked.

Culinary student Katrina Taylor won first place with her honey mustard barbeque Dijon wings.

“Basically, I entered for the fun of it, for the challenge and because I love to cook,” Taylor said. Taylor mentioned she also entered the contest to inspire other students to take advantage of the Culinary Club.

Second place went to Culinary Club President Suzanne Castaneda, who prepared the spicy Asian glazed wings, and third place went to Jason Thomas for his Cajun smoked wings. First- and second-place winners won professional thermometers and the third-place winner won a professional timer. All participants got Culinary Club t-shirts.

Gateway welding student Allen Portzen said he enjoyed sampling the different flavors during Wings in the Spring.

“It was interesting, cool and an enjoyable surprise,” Portzen said.
