salon/barbering studio on the Kenosha
Campus. The studio is open to the
public for haircuts and other services,
which are provided by barbering
students under the supervision
of instructors.

Gateway Technical College Barbering Studio is offering free salon services to students, staff and the general public through April 30. The free services are available between 8:15 a.m. and noon and 12:45 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in Room S137 of the Kenosha Campus.

Trained students in the barbering program provide services under the supervision of lead instructor Sharon Nelson and instructors Michelle Gauthier and Sue Nelson.

Services include haircuts for men, women and children (over 5 years of age), scalp treatments, facials, beard designing, straight razor shaves and hair styling.

In addition, perms, coloring and highlighting are offered on Wednesdays.

Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are recommended by calling (262) 564-2210.

Sue Nelson said the free program has been well-received on campus.

“We’re excited to have this opportunity,” she said. “This program is very much needed in Kenosha.”

The barbering class currently includes Lisa Howard, Dominic Montes, Mitchell Thomas and Brian Fisher. Fisher said he wants to be a barber because of his eye for detail and his desire to be artistic and make people feel good about themselves.

Sitting in Fisher’s chair recently was local resident Jennifer Graves, who saw a flyer on a local bulletin board and made an appointment for a haircut and highlighting. When asked how much she would expect to normally pay for the service, she said, “The last time I went to a salon was four or five years ago, and I paid $140.”

Students interested in joining the barbering program can stop in the studio to take a tour and learn more or find more information online at:
