A whole new world

International Education Week highlights diversity, culture, travel

By Randall Delaney

Attendees enjoyed a whole new world of clothing at the International Fashion Show on the Kenosha Campus last month. The second annual show was one highlight of International Education Week on all Gateway campuses. Activities also included a photo contest, international cuisine and a fair trade marketplace.

International Education Week highlights Gateway’s international flavor in a variety of ways.

The second annual International Fashion Show, held on the Kenosha Campus, featured fashions by Gateway and high school students. Students highlighted fashions inspired by a particular country and some students and staff modeled their foreign fashions.

The special week, held in November, also featured the International Photo Contest on all four campuses. There were about 150 submissions from students and staff. Only 30 of those submissions were chosen for the displays, making for some difficult decisions, said Elaine Asma, Gateway instructor.

A Fair Trade Marketplace was held on the Kenosha, Racine and Elkhorn campuses during the week and students were encouraged to ask questions about the products, how the products are made and how the money goes back to developing countries to help budding entrepreneurs.

Gateway International Education Week also featured the Taste of International Cuisine, Global Scholars Travelogue and an International Outfit Day.

Students who want to take the international theme a bit further can take advantage of educational travel opportunities and partnerships with other colleges.

“Gateway has many opportunities for students to study abroad for a very reasonable price,” Asma said. “Since most of our students have work and family obligations, a semester away isn't usually possible.”

Gateway offers two-week study abroad experiences related to a student's field of study. The college also offers a monetary stipend to traveling students and financial aid also can be used to cover costs.
