There was a chill in the air Nov. 8, which made it a perfect day for a warm bowl of chili. Six teams of two, and one solo competitor, took part in the Culinary Arts Club’s Chili Cook-Off on the Racine Campus during the noon hour. Culinary Arts students served up their tasty variations of chili for the judges, which were made up of anyone who wished to sample.
Judges tried all seven contest entries, served in numbered plastic containers. They also were given cornbread and pudding to help cleanse their palate in between tasting different chili. Diners then wrote down the corresponding number of the chili they felt was the best on a ballot.
“I have a favorite,” said Ada Harris, while finishing her chili lunch in the student commons. “There’s one here that’s not too spicy. It’s just right.” Harris thought the cook-off was an excellent idea and added, “I hope they do something like this again soon.”
It was a two-way tie for first place. The tandem of Rolando Gomez and Denise Trinidad garnered 14 votes, as did the pairing of Suzanne Castaneda and Cristie Leto. All four winners received a digital cooking thermometer for their efforts.
Only one vote off the winning pace was solo entrant Angela Anderson, who picked up 13 votes. She was awarded a digital timer.
“It was a whole lot of fun,” said Castaneda. “The competition was good, but yet the culinary group as a whole is a real team. We helped each other while we were cooking.”
