Gateway Technical College and Delta Hawk Diesel Engines through a grant from the Wisconsin Covenant Foundation, have partnered to develop and offer the Diesel Aviation Manufacturing Certificate. This training will provide students with the skills and competencies to fill positions at both Delta Hawk and similar industry companies. The grant will cover the costs of instruction so students accepted into the program will not be required to pay tuition, along with purchased equipment and materials for training.
Cohorts of up to twenty students each will be trained through this grant at Gateway’s Horizon Center. Students are required to apply for entry into the program.
To qualify, students are required to:
- Attend an orientation session
- Take ACT Work Keys placement tests
- Meet minimum math and reading levels
- Take a Talent assessment
Classes will meet in the evening in five hour blocks. The first session begins September 2013, with a second session beginning in the spring of 2014. The following is an overview of the classes that students will be taking in the program:
- Manufacturing Fundamentals
- Manufacturing Processes
- Diesel Power Plants
- Blueprint Reading
- Diesel Fuel Systems
- Research and Development
- Product Manufacturing (Capstone)
Students who successfully complete the two-semester training will earn a Diesel Aviation Manufacturing Certificate and will be offered an opportunity to interview with Delta Hawk.
Why the need for this partnership and training program?
Delta Hawk Engine Company designs and manufactures two stroke diesel engines for the aviation market. Two stroke diesel technology is new to the aviation industry. Delta Hawk is a start-up company that plans to enter production in 2013 when its pre-production diesel fueled engine moves from testing to commercialization. The company will expand significantly within the next three years to meet demand. Skilled workers are not currently available to fill all of the new positions in assembly, testing, engine reconditioning, engine installation and in the research and development (R & D) laboratory. More skilled workers in this field will reduce workforce shortages, and will give Delta Hawk and similar companies the ability to expand and create new jobs in Wisconsin.
