Graduate styles way to new career

Jykeeia Snow

Jykeeia Snow says she likes Gateway because it’s affordable, but the coursework is rigorous – she was prepared to enter her career when she graduated.

Jykeeia Snow earned a degree in a career she loves.

Helped by instructors with industry know-how, real-world application of her studies and a convenient location, Jykeeia is now working in the cosmetology and barbering industry. She began studying for a different career, but changed when she realized her heart had always been somewhere else.

“I have always loved working with hair, styling hair,” she says. “That’s what I wanted to do.

“I had been to Gateway before, and knew the instructors were great. They seemed like they really wanted you to succeed – and when I started taking classes, I realized it was true. They prepared me for graduation and my career.”

Jykeeia earned a Gateway Barber/Cosmetology degree in 2014.

Jykeeia pointed out that while the cost of a Gateway degree is much less than other alternatives, quality and industry insight are not sacrificed.

“The cost was amazing, but we learned exactly what we needed to know. Our instructors gave us clear details of how we would need to operate at a workplace, including the rules and regulations we would need to follow.

“It was an intense program – but worth every moment. They pushed you, motivated you, made sure you were on track. I see the benefits of that now.”

Jykeeia says she uses skills gained at Gateway every day at the barbering business where she works. She also uses those skills when she worked at an upscale salon in Racine.

“I am doing what I love to do. I wouldn’t be in my career today without Gateway.”

“I’m also much more confident in myself. When I was applying for jobs, I felt a sense of ease because of what I learned at Gateway.”

Jykeeia says the college provides students industry insight through the opportunity to work with actual customers at an on-site barbering and salon shop – The View on 5 Salon and Spa at the Racine Campus – as well as interacting with business owners.

“I graduated, and was able to enter my career immediately,” says Jykeeia. “It was exactly what our instructors said it would be. We knew how to do our jobs, work with customers and provide customer service.

“I am doing what I love to do. I wouldn’t be in my career today without Gateway.”

She tells others about Gateway, too.

“I’ve spoken to others who have considered going into cosmetology at Gateway. I tell them to enroll – it’s the best decision they will ever make.”
