Writing Skills
Measures students’ understanding of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, organization, strategy and style of standard written English. Students are given an essay and asked to edit the essay for errors.
Reading Skills
Measures reading comprehension. Students must derive meaning from reading passages by referring to what is stated and determine meanings of words through their use. It requires students to use reasoning, draw conclusions and comparisons and make generalizations.
Math Skills
Assesses numerical skills related to whole numbers, decimals, fractions and basic problem-solving skills involving arithmetic, pre-algebra elements such as basic operations with integers, fractions and decimals, exponents, ratios & proportions, percentages, absolute values, order concepts, estimation, number theory, and simple probability. If pre-algebra skills are evident, additional beginning algebra skills such as evaluating algebraic expressions, simplification of algebraic expression, quadratic equations, polynomials, integer exponents, rational expressions, and linear equations may be assessed.
