About

Service Learning is a high-impact learning practice that is utilized from pre-kindergarten through higher education as a way to merge community service with classroom practices.  It differs from community service or volunteering by utilizing reflection (thinking and discussing what happened, why, and what kind of an impact it makes on everyone) and by integrating skills and theories learned in the classroom to meet a specific and defined community need.  At Gateway, Service Learning is offered as a curricular (in the classroom), co-curricular (within a club), or a larger service event.

Service learning at Gateway is monitored by the Service Learning Center.  The Service Learning Center offers tools, resources, workshops, information, and connections into the community to assist students and faculty with all means to create and implement a successful service learning project.
