Industrial Mechanical Technician

Program Requirements: 

The Industrial Mechanical Technician associate degree program at Gateway Technical College prepares students to operate, repair and maintain machinery in an industrial environment. Industrial maintenance workers work in factories, power plants, and construction sites. The majority of classwork is hands on using state-of-the art equipment in the newly remodeled Industrial Mechanical lab. As a result of the lab training, students will gain both physical skills and confidence in working on advanced mechanical equipment. Instructors also emphasize communication and teamwork throughout the coursework, which better prepares program graduates for the demands of employers.

What does an industrial mechanic do?

Program graduates are qualified for entry-level jobs in industrial maintenance or for entrance into a skilled trade. With additional experience and continuing education and certifications, many career opportunities are available. A mechanical technician can be a part of a variety of manufacturing industries including automotive, agriculture, electronics, aerospace, food industry and the roller coaster industry.

Learning by doing

Every lesson learned in class will be practiced in the lab, where students become comfortable applying mechanical techniques in real life situations. Students troubleshoot machinery and gain hands-on experience in the Hydraulic and Mechanical lab simulation trainers.

The Industrial Mechanical lab at the Racine Campus is newly remodeled and designed to train students using the latest equipment found in the field today. Equipment includes HAAS CNC lathes and milling machines, where students will operate and perform repair training exercises. Hydraulic and pneumatic workstations are available to build and troubleshoot fluid power circuits. The lab also has manual lathes, milling machines, and surface grinders to teach machining fundamentals and build a solid foundation of mechanical knowledge.

Beyond the classroom, field trips include tours of local manufacturing facilities where students gain valuable insight and instruction, using real world examples of how different equipment functions and is used. The program culminates with a capstone project, where student teams will be challenged to perform many of the skills learned throughout the coursework.

Job and salary outlook

Overall, students will spend about 80 percent of the time with hands-on learning, giving them both the skills and the confidence to work on advanced manufacturing equipment, making Gateway’s graduates very marketable to employers.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of industrial machinery mechanics is expected to grow 19 percent from 2010 to 2020. As factories become increasingly automated, mechanics will be in greater demand to maintain and repair this equipment. Median hourly salary of industrial machinery mechanics was $20.99 in May 2008. Earnings for mechanics vary by industry and geographic region.
