Plumbing Apprentice

Program Requirements: 

Plumbers install pipes for water, gas, sewage, and drainage systems. They install sanitary facilities such as toilets, tubs, bathroom fixtures, showers, kitchen fixtures, drinking fountains, and laundry equipment. Plumbers need a variety of skills to use both hand and power tools as well as welding equipment. Plumbers must also run tests on their installations to assure that the systems meet the plumbing code. They are often called upon to repair these same systems.

General Information

Pay scale: $14.16 - $31.46 per hour
Working conditions
Plumbers work is active and sometimes strenuous. They work indoors and sometimes outdoors. This includes heights as well as trenches. Often, work is done in cramped, wet, or dirty locations for long periods of time.
 
General qualifications: Must be in good physical condition and have a valid driver's license.
 
Union requirements
Must be 18 years old and a high school graduate or equivalent. Must pass aptitude test, personal interview, and submit an application.
 
Length of training
The training program lasts five years consisting of no less than 8,000 hours of on-the-job training with a minimum of 500 hours of classroom instruction and some night classes. Journeyman examination taken upon completion of apprenticeship.

Becoming a Plumbing Apprentice

  1. Have High School Transcripts sent to the union.
    • Transcript request forms are available at the union.
  2. Pass  basic reading, writing, and math test that is required per application.
  3. Testing information is available at the union hall.
  4. Accuplacer test available at Gateway’s Kenosha Campus Student Services (262-564-2300) and the cost is $12.
  5. Interviews are scheduled twice a year in Kenosha.
  6. Union will setup interviews for candidates that have passed test and have their high school transcripts on file. 
  7. You MUST find a contractor to hire you before you can become an apprentice.
  8. After passing the interview your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates to be hired as an apprentice by local contractors.
  9. You will receive a letter of introduction. This should be presented to local contractors when applying for apprenticeship jobs. 
  10. Once hired by a contractor, you will be notified that you are an apprentice and will sign a contract with the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards.
  11. Gateway Apprenticeship Department will notify you regarding registration, classes, and books.
