Contemporary Diabetes Care

Course Description
This course provides an overview of contemporary diabetes care. It is designed to increase the competency of care provided to individuals and groups affected by diabetes at multiple points of access in the health care system. The target audience is Registered Nurses, Advanced Practice Nurses, other interested health care providers, advanced health career students or other professionals that have frequent interaction with individuals and groups affected by diabetes. The course presents basic elements that are essential to diabetes care as well as the evolving research necessary to meet best practice standards. Learners will explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and lifestyle behavior changes related to diabetes care. Concepts of theory and research will be examined by the learner to develop a culturally competent plan of care for individuals and groups in a variety of settings. The learner must have the ability to access and navigate the Internet as well as knowledge of common office software. Before the course begins the learner is to be responsible for and capable of using the college's online learning system by completing the tutorials available on the college website.

Dates Offered Contemporary Diabetes Care Course Number 543-117

The course is offered in an asynchronous online format which gives flexibility to learners that have varying schedules. The course includes some traditional evaluation such as pretest, quizzes, and posttest however the majority of the course weight is centered on learning activities in discussion board. In the discussion boards students and faculty apply contemporary diabetes knowledge to variety clinical situations.

To register for Contemporary Diabetes Care 543-117:

  1. Go to http://gtc.blackboard.com/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp
  2. Click on the blue “Web Advisor” button.

    If you are new to Gateway Technical College
    , click the orange “Prospective Students” button to set up your record, and then click on the "I am New to Gateway" link. Be ready to enter your demographic information. Be sure to click “Submit”. You will receive a student ID number and a password after submitting. Note your:
    • ID number
    • password
    • Your Gateway email address will be on your schedule once you have completed course registration.  Your Gateway email will be used to communicate with when you have been registered

  3. If you are returning to Gateway, click the “Log In” button to access your record. Be sure to note your ID number for your records.

  4. Register for the class.

    To use Express Registration:
    • Select term 2011 Spring.
    • Enter all 10 digits under class # (There may be multiple sections.  See section numbers under Dates Offered for this term. (for example at this time choose section 543-117-3W7C .)
    • Then select submit.

  5. Be sure to read payment information that will come up after you register, and make appropriate payment.
  6. Click “My Class Schedule” under Academic Profile to see the class(es) for which you are currently enrolled. Note class schedule for GTC E-mail which must be used for all course communication.
  7. Log out.
