Program Admissions Process

GATEWAY TECHNICAL COLLEGE ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING

APPLICATION INFORMATION SHEET

1. Who is eligible to apply to the Gateway Nursing Program?                                                      

A. While Gateway will process all Nursing applications, priority for the Technical Studies Clinical sections (543-xxx classes) will be given first to students living within the Gateway district (Kenosha, Racine or Walworth county), then Wisconsin residents, then out of state residents. Due to the high number of in-district applicants, it is very unlikely that out of district or out of state students will be selected for the clinical portion of the program.

AND

B. Students must be a High School Graduate, a High School Senior in their last semester, or have completed at least 50% of the GED, HSED or Adult High School Program. 

Note: To be eligible for Financial Aid completion of one of the programs above is required.

2. When can I apply to the Nursing Program at Gateway?
Applications for the Nursing Program including the Bridge and Clinical Transfer students (see items 4B&C) will be accepted any time of the year. See Number 4 for Admissions Materials needed.

3. Where do I submit my application?
The Nursing Program is offered at the Kenosha and Burlington Campuses. On your application form
select the campus that you want to attend.  SELECT ONLY ONE CAMPUS. Your application and other admission items can be submitted at any campus.

A. NEW NURSING STUDENT (Including Step-Out to LPN Students)-Use Program Code 10-543-1 on application form. All Gateway Technical College forms are available at www.gtc.edu/forms.

  1. Complete Wisconsin Technical College Application Form – Cost $30. Students who are changing programs at Gateway may complete the program Add/Change form and enter Nursing Associate Degree as new program – there is no cost for this form.
  2. Submit an official High School, GED or HSED transcript.
  3. Take Gateway Placement Tests (Reading, Writing and Numerical Skills) or submit ACT , COMPASS or ACCUPLACER scores from another institution.  Testing may be waived for students with prior college credit.

    Lower test scores may necessitate successful completion of remedial and/or prerequisite courses.
  4. Submit official college transcripts if you have completed credits at another college.
  5. Complete Background Information Disclosure (BID) form – cost $15.
  6. Complete Wisconsin/GTC District Residency form.  Proof of residency may be required under circumstances such as a change of address.
  7. Read the Functional Abilities specific to the Associate Degree Nursing Program and submit the sign off sheet

B. LPN TO ADN BRIDGE STUDENTS (Students who have current Wisconsin LPN license)

  1. Follow steps in numbers 4A(1-7) above. Write LPN Bridge on your Application Program choice line and put 10-809-2 for the Program Code.
  2. Submit a copy of your current Wisconsin LPN license.

C. CLINICAL TRANSFER STUDENTS (Students who have completed nursing clinical courses at another college within the last 2 years.)  Make an appointment with a Nursing counselor to discuss the clinical transfer application procedures which will included obtaining a “Letter of Good Standing” from the former school. 

NOTE: Application materials will be processed in the order that they are received. When all of your admissions materials have been received you will receive an acceptance letter to the Nursing Program.  Your acceptance letter will advise you of your next step which includes seeing a counselor for scheduling classes.

4. THINGS TO REMEMBER!

A. It is advisable that you turn in all of the admissions materials at one time, however,  you will not be accepted to the Nursing Program until all admission items have been received and processed.  Your application file must be completed by the start of the term indicated on your application, or your application will be de-activated and you will need to reapply.

B. If all of your required admissions materials have been submitted and you have not received an acceptance letter within three weeks of submitting the last item, please call our admissions office at 262-741-8168.

C. Students cannot start the Nursing Technical Studies courses (543-XXX) until they have been accepted to the Nursing Program and have been selected through the petition process.  For details regarding the petition process refer to the nursing web site at www.gtc.edu/nursing
