The H1N1 Flu has reached a pandemic level globally, and it has the ability to impact our everyday lives locally through illness, the need to take care of a family member or the closure of public facilities. Gateway has taken steps to prevent the spread of possible the disease, protect students, and to work with students if they become ill or in the event of an outbreak on any of its campuses.

Gateway is concerned about your health and has taken steps to prevent the spread of the disease and initiated plans to help students to complete their coursework in the event of a campus-wide closure.

We urge you to watch for symptoms if H1N1 to stay home if you become ill, to prevent the spread of the disease. Symptoms include:

• Fever greater than 100 degrees
• Body aches
• Coughing
• Sore throat
• Respiratory congestion
• In some cases, diarrhea and vomiting

What you can do to prevent the spread of flu:

• frequent hand-washing
• cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
• avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
• avoid close contact with sick people
• stay home if you’re sick

Gateway is committed to preventing the spread of the disease where possible, and that means instructors will work with students to make sure they are able to complete their coursework during this time of a flu pandemic.

Could the H1N1 Flu cause Gateway facility closures?
Yes, Gateway could close facilities – or the entire college -- if it’s deemed necessary. Gateway will work with health department officials from Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties.

How will students be notified if a closure occurs?
Closures will be posted similar to weather closings. Information can be found by calling a recording at (800) 353-3152, going online and checking Gateway’s Web site at www.gtc.edu, or listening to broadcasts at Gateway’s radio station of WGTD and other local participating radio stations.

Gateway is urging students to stay home if they’re sick. What does that mean to students and their classes?
Every effort will be made to work with students who call in sick.

What about instructors who call in sick?
In the event of an extended illness, all attempts will be made to continue to provide instruction toward course completion.

If the campus closes, how do students remain up-to-date on their classes?
Should there be extended closures, a temporary modification in method of instruction and evaluation of student knowledge may need to be made.

How do I know when the campus will re-open?
