“It’s really nice to attach the
learning you do to something real, not just in the classroom. Sometimes
when you’re in class learning about a process like an interview
technique, you wonder whether you’re ever going to use this in the real
world. “So many times when I participated
in a client interview, I thought, ‘hey, I recognize that question from
class!’ It definitely makes you want to take your class work more
seriously.” Graciela was able to use that
classroom instruction in hands-on training at an internship through
Racine Correctional Institution to further strengthen her career
foundation. “When I started at Gateway, I just
had a general idea that I wanted to help people. Now that I’ve seen
what the possibilities are, I want to go as high as I can.”
Graciela
Mares, a May 2007 graduate, says the biggest benefit she received from
her Gateway Technical College training was seeing techniques she
learned in Human Services classes at work in practical application.
