EARN WHILE YOU LEARN
Apprenticeship is a strategy that combines supervised, structured on-the-job training with paid related classroom instruction. Apprenticeships are sponsored by employers, employer associations of labor/management groups (Joint Apprenticeship Committees) that have the ability to hire and train in a working environment. An employment opportunity is the most basic requirement for any apprenticeship. Without a job, there is no “on-the-job training” and such training represents 90% of the program.
Related instruction is a key part of each apprenticeship and is required by the State of Wisconsin apprenticeship law. The paid related classroom instruction is theoretical and technical, and is provided by Gateway Technical College.
Wisconsin law also requires a written contract between the apprentice, the employer sponsor and the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development, Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards (BAS). The contract specifies the length of training, an outline of the skills of the trade to be learned, the number of classroom hours required, and the wage schedule outlining the wages apprentices will receive.
