English Language Learner

Gateway offers English Language Learner (ELL) instruction free to Wisconsin residents age 18 and older.
We offer classes with a teacher for all levels. Most classes meet either two days or two evenings per week and you can study individually or as a group. Students can also use our computer lab to learn English in addition to or in place of classes.

You must register for orientation at a Student Services office, attend a two-session orientation course, register for the class, and attend the class

How to Enroll/Requirements to attend class:*

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Present a photo ID.
  • Classes are free for Wisconsin residents. Non-residents are welcome to attend for a fee of $54 for orientation and $216 for summer classes.

*Help with registration is available on all campuses in English and Spanish.

Orientation
You must attend an orientation before studying English or before working in the adult learning centers. The orientation includes:

  • filling out a registration form
  • talking about your goals
  • taking a test to see what your levels are,
  • personalized study plan developed with an instructor or paraprofessional

Orientations are offered in August to study during fall semester.  Otherwise, you must wait until January orientation to begin spring semester. Limited openings are available in May to study during the summer.
