Celebrate Earth Day, Saturday April 25, 2009 is a community celebration of our planet. Gateway, along with Keep Kenosha Beautiful, Green Kenosha, Snap-on Incorporated and many other Kenosha organizations concerned with the environment, invites the community to come to our Kenosha Campus (3520-30th Avenue) to:
- learn (environmental presentations / workshops / informational booths)
- drop-off hard-to-dispose-of items (like electronics);
- pick-up -- compost, tree saplings, and a gift;
- and to enjoy.
The event will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Activities will be held in the Technical Building of the academic section of the campus and the Horticulture buildings (west-central end of campus). Refreshments will be available for purchase in the student commons.
Refashion Show 11:00- 1:00 pm Models will parade between the Technical building and Student Commons modeling complete outfits at great bargains from Good Will, highlighting the importance of reusing whenever possible.
A drilling ceremony for the new Geothermal heating project, using Geoexchange technology for the Horticulture Building Greenhouse will take place at 1:00 p.m. This is the first of six Gateway student geoexchange projects that we will do Geothermal heating will improve the greenhouse's heating efficiency and, ultimately, crop production.
Refreshments will be sold in the Student Commons
Pike Creek “backyard” clean up. Harborside Academy and UW-Parkside students, in cooperation with Gateway's Horticulture Department will help clean up the Pike Creek streambed and surrounding woods behind Gateway's Horticulture Building. Volunteer check in will be on the south side of the Horticulture building.
Growing Power / Gateway Sustainable Garden Installation: Come participate in an urban sustainable farm plot installation. Learn to build soil grow your own food, start a farmer's market garden and engage your community. Begins at 9:00 am and at 11:00 a.m. on the south side of the Horticulture building.
Compost Pick-up The City of Kenosha will provide compost for you to pick up for use in your garden. BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINER. Each person can take up to 30 gallons each. The compost pile will be located near Gateway's Horticulture buildings during the Celebrate Earth Day event only.
RECYCLE: Computer, Electronics and Other Household Item Drop-off
Goodwill Industries will have a semi-trailer in the southwest corner of parking lot B to accept donations of hard-to-dispose of computers and electronics (as well as other gently used items). They accept gently used:
- Personal computers—hard drive/tower, monitor, mouse, keyboard and printer NOTE: Please visit Room T132 for assistance in zeroing out your computer of data before donation.
- Clothing, shoes and boots
- Jewelry
- Books, records, compact disks (CDs), video tapes and DVDs
- Games, toys and sports equipment
- Housewares: dishes, glassware, kitchen utensils, lamps and small appliances
- Collectibles, antiques, knickknacks and other giftware
- Hand tools and small power tools
- Domestics: linens, curtains, blankets, etc.
- Stereos, radios, VCRs, DVD players, etc. (NO Televisions)
Habitat ReStore: Associated with Habitat for Humanity (building homes for people with low income), Habitat ReStore will be on hand accepting usable wood, appliances, windows, doors, aluminum. For more information, contact 262.898.2929 or restorehabitat@yahoo.com
Used Bicycle Drop-off The Kenosha Bicycle Ambassadors will be accepting used bicycles and bicycle parts to fix up and distribute to the needy. Look for the blue truck and fenced area in the Conference Center Parking Lot.
KIDS' ACTIVITIES Celebrate Earth Day will offer children's activities in both the Horticulture Building and the Technical Building Room T115.
Children's Treasure Hunt. Begin at Horticulture building. Children (with their adults) can learn more about the environment through this treasure hunt throughout the Celebration ground. Participants will receive a complimentary tree sapling.
Technical Building Room T115:
- Plant vegetable seeds to take home to watch them grow
- Environmental activity book using soybean crayons
- Decorate your own nature hiking pouch
- Nature art—turn sticks, leaves, stones and clay in fun art project

Anhalt Well Drilling: Learn about drilling associated with Geothermal energy, using geoexchange technology and loop installation.
Chiwaukee Prairie Preservation Fund: Learn about the Chiwaukee Prairie, its location, flora and fauna, volunteer and educational opportunities, new monitoring program, and our mission to acquire, restore, manage and preserve it. Identify wild plants.
City of Kenosha: Keep Kenosha Beautiful-Kenosha Water Utility: Keep Kenosha Beautiful is an eleven person Commission appointed by the Mayor of Kenosha and approved by the Common Council. Keep Kenosha Beautiful is dedicated to the beautification and betterment of our community as a whole. Our focus is litter prevention, recycling education, and city-wide beautification, while creating community pride through volunteerism. www.keepkenoshabeautiful.org Also learn from Environscape presentation--a minature version of a cityscape demonstrating what happens to stormwater run-off.

Gateway Interior Design-IDK ASID student Chapter: Sustainable interior designs created by students and samples of green design products for residential and commercial interior applications.
Gateway Technical College—Geothermal Energy: Learn about Geothermal heat for your home or business.
Gateway Technical College—Information: Talk with representatives about hot careers, including those being developed supporting “green” initiatives.
GreenKenosha.org: This year's project is promoting the “x-porter” a solution for recycling storage and transportation at public events. At most public events, all items end up in the trash. GreenKenosha has purchased the x-porter and will be promoting its use for recycling of waste from large community and private events.
Growing Power—Kate's Greens: Sample and purchase a delicious and nutritious variety of salad greens and sprouts locally grown in Milwaukee by Growing Power, Inc. Information about Will Allen and the Growing Power story will be available.
Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum: Learn about Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum's mission of cultivating appreciation, understanding, and stewardship of our natural and local heritage through environmental education and sanctuary preservation.
Kenosha Bicycle Ambassadors: Learn about the Kenosha Bicycle Ambassador program. This organization is dedicated to promoting awareness of bicycling as a healthy, environmentally-friendly transportation alternative. See bike machines which make energy through cycling; learn about the new Art Bike Program; visit the bicycle and bicycle part recycling area in the parking lot. Recyling is done locally through the Shalom Center and internationally through Working Bikes Chicago.

Latent Energy Solutions: Solar hot water heating system. A cut-out of a solar collector will be on hand.
Microgy, Inc.: Anaerobic digestion (AD) occurs everywhere. At least 1% of the U.S. energy needs could be met through the digestion of organic material instead of the material being landfilled.
Mud Art—Harborside Academy students have demonstrated how to use organic material to do stencil art. View their work in the Courtyard outside of the Student Commons. They were directed by artist Jesse Graves.
National Wildlife Federation: Learn how much junk mail the average household gets in 3 – 4 months, how to stop junk mail, and why stopping junk mail helps reduce our carbon footprint, helps wildlife, and reduces forest destruction. Root Pike Watershed Initiative Network (WIN)-- Rain Gardens: Root-Pike WIN is a grassroots collaborative that awards grants and offers advisement to organizations for projects that preserve, promote, and protect land and water resources in the Root-Pike Watershed. Learn about their water garden initiative.
St. Vincent DePaul: Learn how items are donated and reused, recycled or sold to assist the needy. Examples of clothes, shoes, jewelry, pictures, and more will be on hand.
Segway Personal Transportation Vehicle. See and learn about this electric-operated mode of transportation.
Small Steps—you can take at home to be “green”: Learn about the many little changes you can make that add up to big savings for the environment.
Snap-on, Incorporated/Bahco Pruning Tools: Learn about Snap-on Incorporated's commitment to the environment, receive a free gift (first 350 visitors), learn about their garden tools.
Southeast Gateway Group Sierra Club: The importance of switching to CFLs from incandescent light bulbs.
Spectrum Pest Control Eco-Tech LLC: Green and organic pest control products and tools. What works and what doesn't.
Transit Now and KRM Commuter Rail: Learn about the rail transit plans for southeastern Wisconsin and the effort to reduce pollution through mass transit. Transportation accounts for 1/3 of the global warming emissions in the US.
University of Wisconsin-Extension Direct your yard and garden questions to the Master Gardeners. Discover the research-based resources and information available through the Kenosha County University of Wisconsin Extension and the Wisconsin Master Gardener Program. Master Gardeners will answer gardening and horticulture questions.
University of Wisconsin-Parkside Environmental Club and the Center for Environmental Education, Demonstration, and Applied Research (CEDAR) www.uwp.edu/go/cedar : Learn about their project at Kenosha's Southport Beach House.
Veolia: Learn what happens to the recyclables they collect from residents of the city of Kenosha. Find out about hazardous waste recycling and more.
Wild Ones: Not for profit group that encourages and assists in the restoration of natural habitats to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities.
Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters: A non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage lawmakers to support conservation policies to protect Wisconsin's public health and natural resources.
Zeroing out electronics (Gateway Technical College information technology students): Just deleting files from your folders does not wipe clean your hard drive. Learn how to really remove data from electronic devices before recycling. (note—they will properly remove data from hard drives if you are donating electronic devices that day). Room T132.
DEMONSTRATIONS AND ACTIVITIES: Gateway Horticulture Greenhouses and Buildings Come to Gateway's Horticulture buildings and greenhouses on the west side of the Kenosha Campus for a variety of educational demonstrations (See Workshop Schedule for more information)

- Tour the Learning Gardens on the south side of the Academic Building and the Horticulture Greenhouses on the west side of campus.
- The flowering plant and vegetable sale will feature cool season annuals such as pansies and many other unusual varieties.
- Ongoing demonstrations will feature information about sustainable garden practices.
- Contained bee hives.
- Vermicomposting (worms) composting
- Community Garden installation
Children's Treasure Hunt—Learn about the environment by participating in a treasure hunt that takes participants through the greenhouses and Earth Day grounds. Participants get a free sapling to plant in their own yard. Trees were donated by Living Lands & Waters Million Trees Project. Six varieties found to be hardy in our area. These two-year old bare root saplings range in size from 12”-30”.
