The award-winning WGTD Radio Theater and the 91.1 Players – along with Siegfried Christoph playing Vincent Price – will do everything possible to keep their radio and studio audience on the edge of their seats with their ninth annual Halloween broadcast.
The production will be broadcast 11:15 a.m. Oct. 19 in front of a studio audience in Room 120 of Gateway’s Center for Bioscience and Information Technology on the Kenosha Campus, 3520-30th Ave.
The featured stories are: “The Middle Toe of the Right Foot,” by Ambrose Bierce; “Nightlight” by local writer and actor, Barbara Tylla; Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.”
Sometimes called the “monster of menace,” Vincent Price was a member of Kenosha-born Orson Welles’ “Mercury Theater.”
“Dr. Siegfried Christoph, who is a Professor at UW-Parkside and a longtime member of the 91.1 Players, has a distinctive voice which really contributes to his ability to create tension and real drama in our broadcasts,” said Steve Brown, co-executive producer of the WGTD Radio Theater.
“He speaks in rich, deep tones, which, to some people, can have an eerie and unsettling quality. He truly becomes Vincent Price, and that’s exactly what we want.”
Barb Tylla, a Racine resident and playwright for “Nightlight,” has been with WGTD Radio Theater for all of its nine years, usually directs all live sound effects. In this broadcast, she is also the director of her own play. Barb is also an accomplished actress and playwright and novelist.
“Barb Tylla is a real treasure,” said co-executive producer Mike Ullstrup. “Her writing makes the characters in her stories come alive. The actors in ‘Nightlight,’ are our youngest members of the 91.1 Players, and when you listen to Baz Spencer (who plays the older teenage brother) and Ben Abrahmson, the younger brother, you really believe the scary story they are experiencing. It’s like this is not a radio play, but the real thing.”
Starring are 91.1 Players Steve Dundis, John O’Leksy, Teresa Meyers, Bazell Spencer, Benjamin Abrahmson, and Barbara Tylla.
Audience members are welcome and admission is free. The audience should arrive by 10:45 a.m. In addition to being aired over WGTD, the program will also be streamed live online at WGTD.org. WGTD can be heard in Racine and Kenosha counties at 91.1 FM, in the Elkhorn area at 101.7 FM, and in the Lake Geneva area at 103.3 FM.
