Controlled burn to be conducted on Gateway’s Racine Campus

A controlled burn of the prairie area just east of the Lake Building on Gateway Technical College’s Racine Campus, 1001 S. Main St., will take place Saturday, April 12.

If conditions are acceptable, the burn should begin at 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and should continue for two to three hours. The burn is being conducted by a group specializing in controlled burns across the state of Wisconsin. They will have trained personnel and firefighting equipment on site to ensure the burn is safe.

A controlled burn is set to a prairie habitat such as the one on the Gateway campus for a number of reasons, including to ensure it is healthy and remove plants which don’t benefit this type of habitat.

If the burn is called off because of weather or other conditions, it would be rescheduled for either Friday, April 18, or Saturday, April 19.
