In the current swirl of electronic communications and social networking, companies have grown to expect constant connections between staff, customers, and business partners. The corporate world relies heavily on its IT Network staff to keep the business operational, secure company data, and provide maximum availability to shared resources.
Students of Gateway Technical College’s IT-Network Specialist associate degree program prepare for a professional career in the computer networking field. IT-Network Specialist is a comprehensive program that begins with architectural design of a network and takes students through installation, configuration, administration, securing, and maintaining cross-platform enterprise network environments.
Gateway graduates may find careers as network or system administrators, telecommunication specialists, network support or network computer specialists.
IT-Network Specialist students receive ample opportunity to explore their occupational options through hands-on training in each IT course they take. This comprehensive program begins with architectural design of a network through installation, configuration, administration, securing and maintaining cross-platform enterprise network environments. An IT-Network Specialist internship is strongly suggested to help students gain work experience and build their resume before graduation.
To gain further hands-on experience, students are encouraged to join the Gateway student chapter of the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). As a member of AITP, IT-Network Specialist students have the opportunity to compete at the National Collegiate Conference. AITP also offers students real world experience through its sponsorship of computer trouble shooting and repair clinics.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overall employment of computer network, systems, and database administrators is projected to increase by 28 percent from 2010 to 2020. There will be an increasing demand for administrators due to the integral part new technology plays in the business world. As mobile technology increases, so will the demand of network specialists. This is due to the fact that organizations need help using mobile technology to communicate with consumers and employees. Median annual salary of network systems and data communication analysts was $69,160 in 2010. Salary varies based on education and experience.
IT industry certifications provide an advantage in obtaining a job or advancing in a current career. Gateway courses will assist students in preparing for the following industry certification exams:
