Health Occupations Certificate

This certificate will provide the student with an overview of Gateway school program and function, introduction to medical terminology, an overview of the health care industry and exploration into various health occupations. Upon completion, the student will be able to make an informed decision.

The Gateway Experience  (18 hours)
Students who take this course will become familiar with Gateway Technical College and services provided. Information includes WebAdvisor, Blackboard, registration processes, financial aid processes, and other essential student resources.

Intro to Medical Language 1-credit (18 hours)
This course focuses on the component parts of medical terms: prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. Students practice formation, analysis, and reconstruction of terms, with an emphasis on spelling, definition, and pronunciation.

Intro to Global Health  3-credits (54 hours)
This course provides an over-view of the health care industry. Students will identify characteristics of various health care service areas. The learner will acquire essential knowledge, skills and attributes necessary to be employed in the health care industry.  There is a focus on ethics, confidentiality, legal issues, responsible behaviors and spoken and written communication. The learner will  investigate roles and responsibilities of a variety of career options within the health care industry.  Students will experience job shadowing in a variety of careers in hospitals, clinics and long term care facilities.
