Hotel/Hospitality Management

Program Requirements:

The hotel and motel industry is booming with a wide variety of management positions, from reservations managers to hospitality and convention managers, and everything in between. A good manager will have great people skills, knowledge of culinary practices and procedures and a general ability to manage. Hotel managers are responsible for supervising staff, ensuring cleanliness of the hotel as well as handling customer service requests. The Hotel/Hospitality Management associate degree program at Gateway Technical College is offered at the Elkhorn Campus, with exciting internship opportunities and hands-on labs. In just two years, students will be prepared for an exciting career in the hospitality industry, with potential worldwide job opportunities. Gateway’s Hotel/Hospitality Management associate degree program offers a flexible schedule, transferrable credits and great hands-on learning. Some classes are held at the beautiful Grand Geneva Resort located in nearby Lake Geneva, providing students with valuable, real-world experience, working side-by-side with hospitality managers.

What does a hotel manager do?

A hospitality manager’s duties can include budgeting as well as scheduling, supervising staff and interacting with customers. Career opportunities for Hotel/Hospitality Management graduates include dining room manager, general manager, front office manager, reservations manager, director of admissions, guest services manager and group sales executive.

Learning by doing

A Hotel/Hospitality Management associate degree from Gateway will prepare students for a career with exciting internship opportunities and hands-on classroom labs.

In addition, students will learn from a variety of guest speakers from the local hotel and tourism industry including human resources managers, catering directors and sales managers. Field trips will include visits to area hotels, resorts and restaurants in both Lake Geneva and Delavan. Students will also travel to Madison for the Legal Aspects of Hospitality Law seminar and will sit in on a Wisconsin Supreme Court proceeding.

Students will gain valuable training through internships at various local hotels and restaurants. Previous internship locations include the Grand Geneva Resort, The Abbey Resort, Lake Lawn Resort, Timber Ridge Waterpark and Carnival Cruise Lines. Students are encouraged to join the Collegiate DECA student organization. Membership in DECA will give students the opportunity to participate in the hospitality marketing competition - a student favorite. In fact, the program boasts two past national second place finishers.

Job and salary outlook

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in hotels and other accommodations is expected to increase by eight percent between 2010 and 2020. The median annual salary of hotel managers was $46,880 in 2010. Salaries of lodging managers are dependent upon the size and sales volume of the establishment and their specific duties and responsibilities.
