Gateway’s ELL program offers instruction in reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, listening and speaking. Classes are offered six hours per week. Program teachers are certified in teaching English to speakers of other languages and use technology to enhance the student’s learning. Students can then transition into Gateway programs.
This program is free to Wisconsin residents ages 18 and older and is held at the Adult Education Center on each of the main campuses and the Burlington Center. Students must first complete an orientation before participating in the program.
You can register for the orientation at Student Services on the campus of your choice. Orientations are held during the first week of each semester. The orientation includes identifying educational goals, taking a written exam to determine level of reading and writing abilities, taking an oral exam to determine level of speaking, receiving class assignment and scheduling and buying textbooks for classes.
Students must bring a photo ID with a Wisconsin address, current telephone number and money to purchase textbook and workbook for the class.
Evening classes are held at the Workforce Development Center, 1717 Taylor Ave, Racine, (262)638-6458. Other ELL evening classes are available for parents with school-age children, please contact (262)619-6218.
