The automated manufacturing field is growing as robots are being used in many manufacturing processes. Skilled technicians are in demand as they are responsible for keeping automated systems running smoothly and efficiently. If you have an interest in robots and how they work an associate degree in electro-mechanical technology is for you. Electromechanical technicians repair and maintain robotics and automation systems. They also help program automated systems as well as perform basic setup and repair of wired lines to various pieces of equipment. Gateway provides hands-on training with up-to-date technology in all core classes. Course topics covered during lecture and hands-on labs include troubleshooting manufacturing processes with programmable logic controllers (PLC), robotics, industrial electrical and hydraulic systems, mechanical power transfer systems and process control systems.
Gateway’s program is designed around the changing skills and training demanded by area manufacturers. Electromechanical technicians use their knowledge of mechanical technology and electrical circuits to repair, troubleshoot, and install electronic and computer-controlled systems that include robotic assembly machines.
Graduates can find careers as electromechanical technicians, maintenance technicians, service engineers, Robot/CNC/PLC programmers and maintenance engineers. Internships may be available through area industry partners. Students are often able to turn these internships into permanent positions.
In every core class students work with equipment they will see on the job including robotics and automation systems. Core classes are self-paced as students are assigned lab projects that are to be completed by the end of the semester. Self-paced courses allow for students to complete the assigned projects independently. Several open lab times are available so students can work around their schedule to complete projects. The student lab features the most up-to-date equipment used in the field. Equipment includes Fanuc robots, Allen Bradley programmable logic controllers, human-machine interfaces, three phase motors stepper and servo motors. Students take several field trips throughout the program to stay up to date on industry standards and trends including to the International Machine and Technology Show in Chicago and company tours at Scot Forge and Borg Indak.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of electromechanical technicians is expected to grow from 2010 to 2020. Electromechanical technicians are generalists in technology, and their broad skill set will help sustain demand for their services. The median annual salary of electromechanical technicians was $49,550 in 2010.
