Turn your enthusiasm for hair care and beauty into a career at Gateway Technical College. Gateway offers a Cosmetology technical diploma that provides hands-on learning opportunities, giving you the confidence and enthusiasm you need to enter a career in a salon.
Gateway’s Cosmetology technical diploma program prepares students to pursue a career as a stylist, a salon owner or salon manager. Graduates can also pursue positions in sales, education and makeup artistry.
Students can earn their technical diploma in as little as one year. The flexible scheduling options are sure to fit different, busy lifestyles. The program includes instruction in hair design, haircutting, permanent waving and manicuring. There are also hands-on classes in makeup artistry, sculptured nails, color analysis and salon management.
Students apply the skills they have learned at The View on 5 Salon & Spa on the Racine Campus. At the salon, students practice techniques on actual clients, under the supervision of a licensed instructor. The full-service salon is open to the public.
Program graduates have several career options including; beautician, stylist, salon owner, salon manager, sales, educator and makeup artist. Salons throughout Racine, Kenosha and beyond have hired Gateway graduates.
From the classroom to the The View on 5 Salon & Spa, students learn hands-on throughout the program. Classroom instruction includes practicing on manikins. Students will then progress to The View on 5 Salon & Spa where they will continue their training by practicing techniques on actual clients, under instructor supervision.
Student will also learn from presentations by local industry professionals from businesses such as Andis, Great Clips, Grand Geneva Spa and Image Makers.
Beyond the classroom, students who join the Kosmetique club have the opportunity to see the latest trends in the industry at the America Beauty Show. Students also practice their skills while participating in a variety of community service activities to benefit organizations such as the local food bank, the Boys and Girls Club and veterans.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, The median hourly salary of hairdressers and cosmetologists was $10.82 in May 2010, with a range of $8 - $20 an hour. The industry is expected to grow 14 percent between 2010 and 2020. This growth is the result of the increasing population and the demand for basic hair services. There also has been a big increase in the demand for hair coloring and other advanced hair treatments.
