Child Care Specialist Apprentice

Program Requirements: 

Child care specialists work in a child care environment caring for infants, toddlers, and preschool children on a daily basis. Child care specialists are expected to keep themselves updated on child care policies and state laws.

Pay scale: $7.25 - $18.00 per hour
 
Working conditions
Child Care Specialists generally work in clean, pleasant surroundings with good lighting and ventilation.
 
Interest and temperament
A person who wants to become a child care worker must have a great deal of patience and understanding to work with children. They should be able to deal well with the public.
 
General qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent. Be in good physical condition and have completed two courses: Introduction to Child Care Profession (40-hours noncredit course) and Skills and Strategies for Child Care Teachers (40-hours noncredit course).
 
Length of training
The program lasts two years consisting of no less than 4,324 hours of on-the-job training with a minimum of 324 hours of classroom instruction including some night classes.
 
Educational benefits
All Child Care apprenticeship courses will apply toward the associate degree program for Early Childhood Education and a scholarship program is available through the Wisconsin Early Childhood Association (T.E.A.C.H.).

Becoming a Child Care Specialist Apprentice

  1. Working in a child care facility requires state certification.
  2. You can become certified to work by taking 307-148 Foundations of Early Childhood Education or 307-151 Infant and Toddler Development.
  3. Once certified, locate a child care facility to sponsor (hire) you as an apprentice.
  4. Contact the Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards (BAS) and meet with a representative with your new sponsor.
  5. Contact Gateway Apprenticeship Department for registration and scheduling information.
  6. Contact T.E.A.C.H. regarding scholarship information
